History of Good Intentions
Good Intentions Counseling Services, “gOOd people. great services. better quality of life”, is a black owned and operated community mental health agency that serves greater Seattle, Everett, and Tacoma through the strong intentions of a multicultural team providing unparalleled clinical services. We consist of 30+ clinical staff, both masters and bachelors level, that possess a consolidated passion to strengthen the quality of life for individuals and families by providing relevant, highly competent, client-focused mental health and behavioral care.
Since its inception in 2015, the agency has created more than 90,000 clinical contact hours in a client base that ranges from 8 to 70 in age. We specifically assist in the plight of the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) population which has encompassed the developmentally disabled, prison re-entrants, autism, juvenile delinquents, LGBQT+, veterans, and trauma affected individuals to name a few.
Amazingly, we have generated just under 7 million in total for-profit revenue and amassed 1.2 million in assets, while most recently preparing to launch a non-profit arm of the organization with grant projections that equal our for-profit annual earnings. Despite much of our services taking place where the patient resides or virtually, Good Intentions operates within two north Seattle brick-and-mortar sites and a downtown shared workspace.
The agency was previously awarded the following grants: WeWork (2019), Hello Alice (2020), and Comcast Empower (2021). Past consulting projects incorporate working with Winco, Google, Microsoft, Nike, Therapeutic Health Services, the Veterans Administration, independent school districts, adult family homes, nursing homes, and adult group homes.
We have partnered with Community Passageways to serve the prison re-entry population as well as assist in preventative measures for children, teens, and young adults that are at risk or already involved with the justice department. The Washington Autism Alliance has entrusted us with delivering positive behavior modification services, and the University of Washington School of Social Work allows us the privilege of supervising student interns. Other alliances have been built with the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA), Aging and Disability Services, Child and Family Services, and the Eastside Counseling Center.
Our Founder and CEO
Phillip Carr is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), Clinical Supervisor, and Behavioral Specialist that began Good Intentions after becoming disillusioned with lackluster solutions in addressing the immense needs of local marginalized communities. While reflecting he states, “None of the clinical staff looked like me, a black male, but the hurting population absolutely did.” This was particularly bothersome in recognizing that diagnosis bias due to cultural incompetence carried significant influence within surrounding agencies and systems.
The result was him deciding to halt assisting other organizations in their delivery of subpar services and instead form his own agency rooted in values that he held dear like integrity, interconnectedness, and excellence in both clinical and administrative endeavors.
As a reflection of Phill’s expertise, he not only clinically supervises other professionals and provides superior services to individuals, couples, and families, but also holds certifications in critical incident stress management (CISM), eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), emotionally focused therapy (EFT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). In supervision and through personal self care, he asserts his deep belief that a patient can only be as healthy as their clinician. Phill also iterates, “One size does not fit all”, in emphasizing the necessity of cultural relatability as an asset for patients in their mental wellness journey.
Upon noticing early in his career that clinicians too often suffered burnout and low wages leading to high employee turnover rates and low quality, inconsistent client services, he has ensured that Good Intentions is a place where clinicians are mentored, valued and fairly compensated resulting in professional longevity with consistent, reliable, high quality service delivery as a heralded byproduct. Amazingly, Good Intentions has a remarkable industry retention rate that is 1.5 times higher than the industry national average.
Our CEO is a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), Washington State Society for Clinical Social Workers (WSSCSW), and Omega Psi Phi fraternity incorporated. He continues to make consistent strides in destigmatizing therapeutic services within BIPOC communities. And we profess with conviction and pure hearts that Good Intentions is a testament to what can be created by a determined person with a powerful vision, and a yearning to meet the needs of the hurting.
