Emotionally Focused Therapy
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a short-term therapy that is utilized with couples and families to improve relational attachment and bonding. The three stages of EFT include: De-Escalation, Restructuring, and Consolidation. De-Escalation involves identifying negative emotions and conflict patterns, as well as becoming more emotionally available. Restructuring is focused on acceptance and compassion towards others. Consolidation consists of developing new communication and bonding strategies towards the path of self-regulation and permanent change.

Emotionally Focused Therapy can have lasting effects! One meta-analysis shows that for couples who have mild to moderate distress that participated in EFT do better than 89% of couples who did not. 53% of the couples that fared better based on the reliable change index had lasting effects of 4 months to 2 years. Another study adds to this, showing that symptoms of depression have significantly lessened in couples who do EFT.
Infertility
Emotionally Focused Therapy has been shown to significantly help couples cope with infertility. On study shows that couples who participated in EFT had large increases in marital adjusmtent and quality of life. This included improving areas of the couple’s social, physcial, and psychological relationship.
