Positive Behavioral Support (PBS)
Positive Behavioral Support (PBS) is a behavior management system used to understand what fuels an individual’s adverse behavior. Our team is here to support individuals and families in home, school, and hospital settings.
These inappropriate behaviors develop because they are functional, meaning they serve a purpose. Through reinforcement in the environment, they continue. For example, in the case of students and children, they sometimes receive an object, such as a toy, or attention when they engage in the behavior, which motivates them to do it again in the future.
This tiered approach to behavioral management has been proven to reduce disciplinary incidents and increase the general sense of safety in the environment where it is applied. Some of the strategies we teach include the proper establishment and consistent adherence to routines, silent signals, and positive phrasing. PBS acknowledges that for people to meet behavioral expectations, they must first know what the expectations are.
The PBS support process involves the clinician and client working together to identify a goal or new behavior for the patient. Then the clinician can plan and implement a multi-tiered strategy to achieve that goal. Our team is here to support individuals and families in home, school, and hospital settings.
