Trauma Informed Care (TIC)
Trauma Informed Care (TIC) is a compassionate approach to counseling that acknowledges just how common trauma is in our lives. Many people associate Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with military service, but there are countless types of trauma, all of which can lead to PTSD. The most common responses to a traumatic experience are shock or acute stress. Sometimes a person does not realize how traumatic an experience was or the great extent to which it has affected their life.
People who develop PTSD from Trauma, however, relive those emotions through disturbing thoughts and feelings related to their trauma even after the event is behind them. They may endure flashbacks or nightmares. Many report feelings of sadness, numbness, fear, or even anger. Others say they feel detached or estranged from people, or experience disorientation so severe they can hardly comprehend the things happening around them.
Living in this constant state of agitation poses a risk to our physical and emotional health. For this reason, it is best to seek help sooner rather than later. The sooner a person can begin to process the trauma they sustained, the more quickly they can experience improvement to the severity and frequency of symptoms.
Good Intentions encourages all staff to be trauma aware and implement assessments to understand the full impact of trauma on a client. This way we can intervene, collaborate, and channel the resilience of our clients to create the best possible result for their treatment.
